Today we would like to invite you to a free and very healthy activity to be organized in Xàbia: an excursion to the Montgó Mountain on Sunday 24 January 2016 at 08:00 h. The gathering point is Jávea’s Shooting (5, San Jeronimo / Denia road, Phone number +34 965 792 632).
Montgó massif rises above the plains of Javea, Denia and Ondara and reaches a maximum height of 753 m. above sea level. It is east-west oriented and is conformed mainly by large limestone walls that define their appearance, making it one of the most unique places on the east coast environment.
The peculiar geography of this area -with large walls and gullies- as well as its strong contrast between the two faces of the mountain, form a series of habitats where you can find a varied natural wealth. The biogeographical position and natural border between different areas, the paleobiogeographic history and current weather conditions allow several species to exclusively live in this place. All these make Montgò the most important of the Western Mediterranean natural areas.
Valencian government declared this area “Natural Park” (May 1987 – Decree 25/1987), which includes the San Antonio Cape and Las Planas plains, who serves as a natural link between the coast and massif. In terms of animal species, it is remarkable the presence of Bonelli’s eagle and a couble of owls in the crags of the Natural Park, where also live other species of birds like the kestrel and peregrine falcon.
At the seaside cliffs it is possible to spot the Audouin’s, Caspian and Sardinian Gull and the shag and other species.
This free excursion is organized by the Xabia’s hikers Centre (CEX). Further info at cexxabia@gmail.com
