Check here the information note from the Spanish General Directorate of Traffic and transport (www.dgt.es) on driving licenses community, information of interest to all foreigner residents in Spain.

Holders of a Community driving license with an indefinite duration or exceeding 15 years will be required to renew, provided that they have legal residence in Spain after 2 years from January 19, 2013, date of entry into force Directive 2006/126 / EC. Such proceedings may be conducted in a Provincial Traffic Bureau by calling for an appointment at 060 or at www.dgt.es.

For example:

A holder of a Community driving ID with an indefinite duration or exceeding 15 years, and with legal residence in Spain obtained by 19/01/2013 or before that date, shall renew their driving licenses from 19 / 01/2015.

A holder of a Community driving ID with an indefinite duration or exceeding 15 years, and with legal residence in Spain obtained by 06/06/2014 must renew the driving licenses from the day 06/06/2016.

This procedure is performed in compliance with regulations on driving permits (Directive 2006/126 / EC) and the Regulations on Drivers approved by RD818 / 2009, dated 8 May) as an indispensable element of the common transport policy, helping to increase the safety of road traffic.

Member states should be able to apply the period of validity prescribed by the Directive to a license without a limited administrative validity issued by another Member State in whose territory the holder has resided for more than two years.

Therefore, the countries of the European Union since 2013 have a single driving license for 28 members necessary to achieve homologation of over 110 types of driving licenses that existed a few years ago.
