The heavy storms of the 14th of December 2009 caused landslides at the Moraig Beach in Poble Nou de Benitachell (Alicante), badly affecting the parking area, which has been severely damaged.
A few months ago, the repair works to the damaged area were approved, with the go ahead to rebuild the breakwater and replace the asphalt surface with loose material such as gravel, similar to the materials found naturally at the cove, as this will significantly reduce the damage in the event of the water surpassing the breakwater during a storm.
According to the latest news received from the Town Hall of Poble Nou de Benitachell, the company Tragsa began working on the Moraig beach on the 6th of April, 2010, when they started separating the old asphalt from the soil, as the asphalt becomes a contaminant when in contact with salt water, and this will then be removed. They are also awaiting delivery of the rocks needed to rebuild the breakwater.
According to the Ministry’s technicians, the breakwater will be higher than before and the completion date for the restoration work, unless problems arise, should be, as planned, the 1st of June, 2010.
