Volvo Ocean Race 2011

The Race Village of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 will open at the port of Alicante on 14 October, the same day that will begin three busy weeks of activities in Alicante in the framework of the regattas and races of the Stage 1 of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 that will connect Alicante to the South African port of Cape Town in a route of 6,500 nautical miles (12,038 kilometers) on 5 November 2011.

The Race Village will be a sort of amusement park with free access to the dock of the port of Alicante, which will remain open for three weeks until 5 November and will have a comprehensive schedule by the sea for all who enjoy the sailing sports.

Among the activities planned we can highlights the museum of the Volvo Ocean Race, which will have one permanent exhibition and a temporary one, where you can  observe the work in the control room of the race where the fleet is monitored 24 hours a day until the arrival to Galway (Ireland) next July 2012.

In addition, the visitors can get close to the Volvo Open 70 race boats -the fastest single hull sailing boats in the world- and even compare them with the boats of past editions, set out in the harbor. Visitors can experience the atmosphere of race, mingle with the crews and see how they get ready for competition.

Regattas from 29 October

29 October: In-Port Race or shore Regatta: quick and tactic waterfront race which will decide the first leader of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12.

30 October: Pro-Am Race, as the In-Port race, but with the presence of guests on board.

1 to 5 November: Legends Regatta and Reunion will gather racing boats and crews who participated in the 38-year history of the race.

5 November: Kick off the Stage 1 of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 with final destination Cape Town port.
